Fanfold Royals 1 Rayner's Lane 2

The honours went to the Middlesex side in this, the inaugural staging of what it is hoped will become an annual fixture in the county's football calendar.

An enthusiastic crowd of supporters gathered on a clear, cold night at Isthmian League side Cheshunt's ground saw two very good sides of over 40s battle for the spoils in a contest that was evenly contested throughout with both sides looking capable of final victory.

An early goal for Fanfold fairly refelected the side's dominance of proceedings for the first 20 minutes or so of this match but Rayners Lane were never out of things and continually threatened retribution.

The initial steam had gone out of the Royals and the Rayners Lane forwards were denied only by some resolute defending and the occasional lack of touch by their big front men.

Another defensive mix-up shortly after the restart saw the lads from the Lane even things up and after that there were increasing patches of one-way traffic as Rayners Lane pressed for the winner.

The height advantage enjoyed by Rayners Lane in their two strikers assisted by their even taller centre half enabled them to domninate the Royals' penalty area when it mattered and the crucial deciding goal followed late in the second half.

Bert Dearman, representing county football and assisted by Brian Smith, managing director of leaguemanager.biz, presented the teams with their medals and the winning skipper with the leaguemanager.biz sponsored trophy.
